View the Manpages in Firefox

A cool way to view manpages in linux: View them as html (with color) in firefox.

First, you need to install a program called man2html. Doing this in Ubuntu is as easy as opening a terminal and typing:

sudo apt-get install man2html

Now, that you have this program installed, open your firefox.

From the menu, choose bookmarks -> Organize Bookmarks and add a new bookmark with these values:

Location: http://localhost/cgi-bin/man/man2html?query=%s

Keyword: man

Click add and you’re done.

Now, to view a manpage, go to firefox’s URI’s bar (that’s where you usually type a websites URL), and type:

man something.  For example: man ls

And see the magic ;)

3 Comments to View the Manpages in Firefox

  • TC says:

Or type man in the address bar. works 99.9% of the time with zero effort

  • TC says:

sorry it the word CMD was removed (as it due to it having angle brackets)

    so try

    man firefox
    man nslookup
    man apache

  • Amir Watad says:

I think I got you TC. What happens in your case might be this:
In firefox 3, when you type a string which is not a valid domain name, Firefox will query Google with that string and take you to the first result (The “I’m feeling lucky” functionality). So in your case, I guess it takes you to this website: http://pwet.fr/man/linux/commandes/
